You are looking at a antique compass, magnifying glass and telescope set all in a wooden box reinforced by metal strips. Was found during a turn out of the attic. We say brass but in fairness the compass, the telescope and the magnifying glass could be made of bronze, not sure how to tell the difference. The box is made of a hardwood, possibly oak but again we can't say that with 100% certainty. Overall condition is very good, as per the pictures. Not sure of the age though we have had it for at least 20 years and it was not new then. Henry Browne & Son Ltd, Barking & London, 'Sestrel' Trade Mark, No. /B, Made in England. This compass is considered the finest of its type ever designed. The bowl is cast bronze. The optical glass prism allows the user to sight at the object and at the same time see the compass bearing in his field of view, and magnifies the card for easy use. An iridium chip beneath the card lights it for night time use. The compass is mounted on a solid teak handle with card-holder to make notations. COMES COMPLETE WITH (The compass sits in a) holder that can be fixed to bulkhead, mast, etc - as appropriate. Henry Browne & Son made only the highest quality marine navigation gear under the "Sestrel" trade mark and were purchased by Lilley & Gillie around when the marine industry was being consolidated.
