Biography: André Saraiva is a French graffiti artist and entrepreneur, born in in Uppsala in Sweden. Of Portuguese origin, her parents flee the regime of the dictator Salazar and emigrate to Sweden in the early 70s. At the age of 10, he moves to Paris with his family. He then discovers graffiti, and in , he invents his famous persona, Mr A. At a frantic pace of about 20 tags per night, over Mr. A have been drawn on all media since the beginning of his career. After years of hanging out in the world of graffiti without really acquiring recognition, his character of Mr. A suddenly finds a real success. Mr A is more than a signature, it's a joyous character with a bulbous face, often wearing a top hat and whose eyes, one round, and the other sealed by a cross, seem to be winking at you. Perched on long straight legs, Mr. A. resembles its inventor: smiling, charming and mischievous. After the opening of his gallery in Paris 'La mercerie d’André' in which he sells his works, he is spotted in by Japanese patrons who propel him on the Tokyo art scene. In , he opens the concept store BlackBlock in the Palace of Tokyo. In , André creates the frescoes of the new Tokyo airport terminal. He appears in in the film by Banksy, Exit through the gift shop. André Saraiva knows a great international reputation for his work as an artist but is also disparaged by some as a ‘vandal’, notably by environmental activists defending national park Joshua Tree in California, where Andre made a graffiti on a rock located in the parking lot of the park. In , his works are exhibited at the Museum of art in Los Angeles, at the Grand Palais in Paris and the 54th Venice Biennale. In , a retrospective is organized at the Museu do Design e da Moda, in Lisbon. He has collaborated with Futura, Belvedere, Orangina, Mango, Uniqlo and many other artists and brands. He is now one of the big names with JonOne, Obey, Invader, Dface and the rest.
