Grey surface patina with golden reflections. Obverse: Sea turtle viewed from above. Reverse: Square incuse punch of windmill blades divided infive parts. Inverted stamp.Rare type: R2.Cf: HGC  ; Cop 511 ; Delepierre ; Dewing ff. On this specimen is a smooth shell of a sea turtle. This would be one of the most ancient types of coinage of the city. The city of Aegina experienced a phenomenal growth to the point where it set itself up tochallenge its great rival Athens. In the 7th century BC this important commercial city was the first to mint its coins with pieces decorated with a turtle. Thanks to its powerful navy,it succeeded in not only taking control of the commercial routes of the Eastern Mediterranean but also played a crucial role during the Battle of Salamis between the Greeks and Persians in 480 BC. Rare 18th/19th century copy by one of the most famous counterfeiters in history, Carl Wilhelm Becker. Becker was born at Speyer on 28 June . His work was done entirely freehand; there was no mechanical copying, nor did he cast dies. The material of the dies was steel, embedded in soft iron. The metal for his coins was often melted down out of ancient copies. The striking was done with a sledge-hammer, in the ancient manner, not with a press.
