Antique Chokwe mask, Mwana Pwo from Angola/Congo. Carved wood with iron earrings, late 19th century early 20th. Good condition with a lovely patina although there is quite a large stable and obscure crack in the headress which attests to it's age. Typical tribal scars to forehead. This mask represents a beautiful young woman, Mwana Pwo, who represents the female ancestor. She appears at the initiation and circumcision of young boys, also at the induction of a new chief and at funerals and fertility rites. Would prefer to meet in person but will post and accept PayPal.
