A Study in Consciousness: A Contribution to the Science of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Besant, Annie Wood, PUBLISHER: Martino Fine Books, Reprint of Edition. This book was intended as an aid to students in their study of the growth and development of consciousness, offering hints and suggestions which might prove useful to them. It is a contribution to the science of psychology. She writes that the seed of consciousness is the Atma-Buddhi-Manas, the Jivatma. The Super-consciousness includes the whole of the consciousness above the waking-consciousness, like dreams, visions, inspirations, etc. To bring the super-consciousness into manifestation on the physical plane, Besant proposes (in the early stages) to render the brain and sense-organs unresponsive to physical impacts and to induce Trance. This can be done by using the methods of Yogis. But she also says that there is a difference between the super-physical conditions of consciousness in the hypnotised subject and in the Yogi.

The Mystery of Consciousness

The Mystery of Consciousness

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Searle, John R., PUBLISHER: New York Review of Books, It has long been one of the most fundamental problems of philosophy, and it is now, John Searle writes, "the most important problem in the biological sciences": What is consciousness? Is my inner awareness of myself something separate from my body? In what began as a series of essays in The New York Review of Books, John Searle evaluates the positions on consciousness of such well-known scientists and philosophers as Francis Crick, Gerald Edelman, Roger Penrose, Daniel Dennett, David Chalmers, and Israel Rosenfield. He challenges claims that the mind works like a computer, and that brain functions can be reproduced by computer programs. With a sharp eye for confusion and contradiction, he points out which avenues of current research are most likely to come up with a biological examination of how conscious states are caused by the brain. Only when we understand how the brain works will we solve the mystery of consciousness, and only then will we begin to understand issues ranging from artificial intelligence to our very nature as human beings.

Born to Believe: God, Science, and the Origin of Ordinary

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Newberg, Andrew / Waldman, Mark Robert, PUBLISHER: Free Press, "Born to Believe" was previously published in hardcover as "Why We Believe What We Believe." Prayer...meditation...speaking in tongues. What do these spiritual activities share and how do they differ? Why do some people believe in God, while others embrace atheism? From the ordinary to the extraordinary, beliefs give meaning to the mysteries of life. They motivate us, provide us with our individual uniqueness, and ultimately change the structure and function of our brains. In "Born to Believe," Andrew Newberg, MD, and Mark Waldman reveal -- for the very first time -- how our complex views, memories, superstitions, morals, and beliefs are created by the neural activities of the brain. Supported by groundbreaking original research, they explain how our brains construct our deepest convictions and fondest assumptions about reality and the world around us. Using science, psychology, and religion, the authors offer recommendations for exercising your brain in order to develop a more life-affirming, flexible range of attitudes. Knowing how the brain builds meaning, value, spirituality, and truth into your life will change forever the way you look at yourself and the world.

The Secular Scripture: A Study of the Structure of Romance

The Secular Scripture: A Study of the Structure of Romance

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Frye, Northrop, PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press, Northrop Frye's thinking has had a pervasive impact on contemporary interpretations of our literary and cultural heritage. In his "Anatomy of Criticism," a landmark in the history of modern critical theory, he demonstrated his genius for mapping out the realm of imaginative creation. In "The Secular Scripture" he turns again to the task of establishing a broad theoretical framework, bringing to bear his extraordinary command of the whole range of literature from antiquity to the present. Romance, a mode of literature trafficking in such plot elements as mistaken identity, shipwrecks, magic potions, the rescue of maidens in distress, has tended to be regarded as hardly deserving of serious consideration; critics praise other aspects of the "Odyssey," "The Faerie Queene," Shakespeare's last plays, and Scott's "Waverley" novels, for example, while forgiving the authors' indulgence in childishly romantic plots. Frye, however, discerns in the innumerable romantic narratives of the Western tradition an imaginative universe stretching from an idyllic world to a demonic one, and a pattern of action taking the form of a cyclical descent into and ascent out of the demonic realm. Romance as a whole is thus seen as forming an integrated vision of the world, a "secular scripture" whose hero is man, paralleling the sacred scripture whose hero is God. The clarity of Northrop Frye's perception, the scope and suggestiveness of his conceptualizing, the wit and grace of his style, have won him universal admiration.

The Manufacture of Madness: A Comparative Study of the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Szasz, Thomas, PUBLISHER: Syracuse University Press, Every age, Thomas Szasz maintains, has its methods of labeling others to assign them a particular fate; the witch and the heretic were consigned to fire, for example. In the twentieth century, however, the priest has been replaced by the psychiatrist, the infidel by the patient; only the way in which the victims differ from society at large with its ensuing punishment (all for the good of society, then, as now) is different. Indeed, Szasz makes it clear that medicine is if anything a more insidious tyrant than religion because it purports to be beneficial to the patient as well as the commonwealth. "Of the thousands of books published each year in the United States, only a small proportion represents a significant contribution to the advancement of man's understanding of man. In my opinion, The Method of Madness is one of those rare books". -- American Sociological Review

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Begich, Nick / Roderick, James, PUBLISHER: Earthpulse Press, In Earth Rising II, Begich and Roderick explore several new technology areas as well as their implications for personal privacy, security and the state of democracy in the beginning of the 21st century. In the early s in the weeks before Watergate this book begins with the mysterious disappearance an airplane carrying the United States House Majority Leader Hale Boggs and Alaska Congressman Nick Begich. Decades later, documents surface that implicate the government. Their fight against a corrupt FBI, a morally bankrupt Executive Branch and fight for an open government, fully accountable to the people, may have contributed to their demise. That decades old event became the springboard to the exposure of technologies contained in this book's pages. The book includes: New Underwater Sonars and the Possible Death of the Seas. Marine Mammal and Whale Beachings A Military Side Effect. Energy in the Air and the Implications of Cell Phone Technology. Dataveillance, Security, Privacy and the End of the Road. Information Overload and the Impacts of Technology. Implantable Chips and the New Economy.Using over 300 referenced sources, the hallmark of Begich and Roderick's research efforts, concludes with a discussion of the implications of these technologies and alternative directions that are possible. The 21st Century has begun it is this generation that will determine the direction of our technology as either our master or our servant. Earth Rising II will challenge readers to seek a better direction for the people of the planet rather than the betrayal of our science, our society and our individual souls.
