A brief exploration of functionalism within Cultural Anthropology: Ritual is a phenomenon that is ingrained into many aspects of our lives whether we are conscious of it or not. It is a subject of considerable anthropological discussion and many theories have been devised to account for its existence and meaning. This essay will focus on the functionalist approach to ritual in terms of its preceding theories, the different directions it took, and the theories that it inspired. This will be done primarily through an historical analysis of functionalism throughout the 19th and 20th century by its key proponents.

Cultural Development of Mathematical Ideas: Papua New Guinea

Cultural Development of Mathematical Ideas: Papua New Guinea

Drawing upon field studies conducted in ,and with a remote Papua New Guinea group, the Oksapmin,Geoffrey Saxe traces the emergence of new forms of numerical representations and ideas in the social history of the community. In traditional life, the Oksapmin used a 27-body-part counting system, and there is no evidence that Oksapmin used arithmetic in prehistory. With shifting practices of economic exchange and schooling, children and adults unwittingly reproduce and alter the system as they

Feminism and Global Chineseness: The Cultural Production of

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Zhu, Aijun, PUBLISHER: Cambria Press, This book deconstructs the controversy of globally located Chinese women authors, including Maxine Hong Kingston (America), Wei Hui (Mainland China), Li Ang (Taiwan), and Li Bihua (Hong Kong). It vividly shows how these authors are trapped in a dilemma between feminism, nationalism, and neocolonialism complicated by the powerful influences of global popular culture. This book not only engages in the much debated major issues such as gender, nation, narration and globalization, but more profoundly, it also points out the cultural and political significance of literary and cultural criticism, a much neglected area of research. The author's detailed examination of Chinese nationalism from the perspectives of gender and globalization shows her sharp awareness of the changing geopolitical mapping of Chineseness. Critics of Chinese literature and culture will benefit from this work in this era of social and political changes. "The book is an ambitious, original, and provocative study of modern and contemporary Chinese literature and culture. this book brings a fresh approach to the developing field of Chinese feminist studies and to the field of Chinese literary criticism." - Professor Jianmei Liu, University of Maryland, College Park

A Brief History of Citizenship

A Brief History of Citizenship

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Heater, Derek, PUBLISHER: New York University Press, From Plato to Rorty, A Brief History of Citizenship provides a concise survey of the idea of citizenship. All major periods are covered, beginning with Greece and Rome, continuing on to the Middle Ages, the American and French Revolutions, and finally to the modern era. Heater effectively argues that we cannot begin to understand our current conditions until we have an understanding of the initial idea of "the citizen" and how that idea has evolved over the centuries. Important topics covered include how citizenship differs from other forms of sociopolitical identity, the differences between nationality and citizenship, and how multiculturalism has changed our ideas of citizenship in the twenty-first century. This concise and readable book is an ideal introduction to the history of citizenship.
