He started his military education at the Royal Military School in Brussels. He was appointed in the cabinet of the Belgian War minister as lieutenant of the Military Engineers. He helped build the Belgian Army and helped with the introduction of conscription. As of until his death in he mainly busied himself with the design and construction of forts around Antwerp (see ‘Stelling van Antwerpen’), Liège and Namur. He warned the Belgian government for a capital mistake to not build a fort at Lieze. This proved to be a strategic blunder in when the Germans invaded. The mistake was corrected in with the construction of Fort Eben-Emael nearby. Read More
