Description This is a brass surveyors level with compass, i.e. a dumpy level with compass, made to measure in the horizontal plane only and rotating around a fixed vertical axis. The telescope measure 12 " in length while the instrument stands 7.5" high and 5" in width. This type of instrument is often seen place on a tripod but could be used without such a stand. It does employee a compass seen below the telescope. Above it is a brass level and a steel sight. The barrel is engraved with the name 'E R Watts & Son, no 319' and is dated along with the broad arrow, triple armed mark indicating British government property, and often found on all types of measuring devices including watches used during wartime. There are oxidation marks and perhaps mild pitting or specking of the metal surfaces.
