R. of CONGOMaterial: Wood and natural pigments.Surface look: patina of useCosmetic condition: very good condition.Small masks such as this one were used for protection, education and tribal identification, and in ceremonies of rites of passage and sanctuaries. The wood has a nice patina from being manipulated and used.Songye Kifwebe masks are known for their wonderfully carved abstract designs. It is said that the grooves are related (apart from to zebras) to a type of striped antelope that inhabited the area. These masks were used to exert social and political control by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society, with men and women, whose masks are different, representing spirits (Kifwebe) connecting this world with the world of spirits. Dance ceremonies were used to mark important periods of transition and social transformation. Read more
