This 14th-century manuscript leaf is from a Latin breviary written in France. The text is written in two different colours and letters. On the left is a beautiful gilt-heightened decoration, above the text are 2 drolleries. A drollery (from the French for drôle “funny” or “humorous”), often also called a grotesque, is a small decorative image in the margin of an illuminated manuscript. Artists and craftsmen used to apply these caricatured decorations sometimes for education, but usually for enjoyment.This is a manuscript on vellum (thin parchment - animal skin) with some beautifully decorated initials, with penwork in the margins.
